A Note From the Author
Hi, I’m Dr. Colleen Spiegel.
Like a lot of high-achievers, I grew up being told a simple formula for success:
Do well in school, get a good degree, and you’ll live comfortably.
So I did exactly that.
I took out student loans.
I earned my Master’s degree, and eventually my PhD in Engineering.
I worked hard, built my credentials, and did everything I was told would lead to security.
And it did — at least on paper.
I became a scientist and engineer at a large manufacturing company, working on high-profile projects that looked impressive from the outside… but came at a serious personal cost.
My job regularly demanded working past midnight, during vacations, and even on Christmas Eve.
I earned a six-figure salary with bonuses.
And I was responsible for the majority of my family’s income.
From the outside, it looked like I had every reason to stay.
But eventually, I realized something that changed everything:
Comfort is not the same as freedom.
And no salary was worth sacrificing my health, my family time, and control over my future.
So I made one of the hardest decisions of my life.
I left my job — even while supporting my family — and started my own business.
And I didn’t just do this once.
First, I Built a High-Tech Product Company
My first leap into entrepreneurship was building a high-tech, product-based business.
I had to learn:
How to evaluate commercialization potential
How to turn technology into real products
How to build a business model funders would support
How to manage risk while still moving forward
There was no clear roadmap for technical professionals becoming founders — so I learned the hard way.
Then, I Did It Again — With a Consulting Business
Years later, I left employment again to build my current company, Semscio, where we help high-tech startups secure funding and grow.
Since then, I’ve helped hundreds of startups obtain funding from agencies including:
The National Science Foundation (NSF)
The Department of Defense (DoD)
The National Institutes of Health (NIH)
I’ve worked with biotech, medtech, software, materials, energy, and advanced manufacturing startups — and I’ve seen exactly what separates ideas that get funded from those that don’t.
And across all of them, I kept seeing the same problem:
Brilliant people.
Great ideas.
Stuck in demanding jobs.
With no safe, structured path to entrepreneurship.
That’s why I wrote this book.
By the End of This Book, You Will Have:
